As a natural resource professional with over 20 years of experience, I have worked on complex and controversial natural resource management issues regionally, nationally, and internationally as both a federal employee and an environmental consultant. As a wildlife biologist, I perform site investigations and apply my ecological knowledge to planning and conservation efforts and energy development, transmission, and mining. As a lawyer, I conduct legal research on topics affecting natural resources and development efforts, specifically as they relate to management policies and environmental laws such as the National Environmental Policy Act and the Endangered Species Act. From endangered salmon issues in the Pacific Northwest to oil spill restoration in the Gulf of Mexico, to large river ecosystem restoration and wildlife management in National Parks, I have assisted federal agencies in navigating environmental laws to develop scientifically sound and legally defensible management plans, programs, and strategies. I have contributed to national endeavors such as the DOI initiative on adaptive management as well as coordinating with multiple cooperators, and conducting species and habitat evaluations for local projects that have included a variety of habitat conservation and energy development activities. Internationally, I worked with the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources Protection for the Republic of Georgia, conducting stakeholder meetings and developing statutory amendments to strengthen the laws and regulations of its protected areas. From these experiences, I have gained valuable insight into both natural resource conservation and energy issues, science, policy, and stakeholder perspectives across the country and the world. In assisting my clients in meeting their needs, I have sought to evaluate and consider the “triple bottom line” (environmental, social, and economic costs and benefits) for difficult challenges in order to reach sustainable decisions.
