Manager, Multimedia GroupAltair Technologies, Islamabad Jan 2010 - Jul 2010Islamabad, PakistanIn this role, I was responsible for Multimedia Group at Altair Technologies. One of the major tasks include a funded research project, ‘ Real-time implementation of H.264 video decoder on TI’s Davinci Multicore Architecture. Target was development of an optimized video solution for real-time performance using Davinci Multimedia Platform. I managed both the hardware and software teams. Software team was responsible for algorithmic optimization of H.264 open source decoder for real-time performance and partitioning of H.264 decoder for parallel multithreaded application to get better performance. Hardware team was responsible for implementation of H.264 decoder on Davinci platform and porting of critical sections of the H.264 decoder in C64x Assembly and its assembly level code optimizations to improve MIPS figures. Hardware team also partitioned the decoder between ARM and C64x cores for parallel processing. - Other tasks included proposal writing, project budgeting and project related correspondence.

Technical Team Lead, Multimedia GroupAltair Technologies, Islamabad Jan 2008 - Dec 2009IslamabadI managed a team of developers in various projects related to implementation and optimization of video codecs on different embedded platforms. This role also involved project management, team work and coordination with the customer. One such project was about Implementation of FFMPEG Library on Avieon Embedded MSP Platform. The project involved porting of FFMPEG library on Avieon platform. Our team optimized H.264 for Avieon MSP embedded processor. First cycle intensive parts of the H.264 Decoder such as Loop Filter, Motion Compensation and CAVLC were optimized in C. Next, these blocks were ported to Avieon MSP Assembly and Avieon single instruction different operations (SIDO) Architecture was exploited to reduce computational complexity.

Sr. Software EngineerAltair Technologies, Islamabad Nov 2005 - Dec 2007IslamabadI worked on the algorithmic optimization of video codec H.264 reference C implementation and its porting on Mediaworks MW301 processor as part of a multimedia application. Code intensive blocks of H.264 that include, variable length decoding (VLD), intra and inter-prediction, loop-filtering were optimized in C to get higher fps during video playback.

Research AssistantMultimedia Lab, Lums, Pakistan Sep 2003 - Oct 2005LahoreI was part of the research group at Multimedia Lab working on the development of an audio solution based on an embedded platform. Speech Codec G.729A was optimized on Analog Devices BF533 platform in C and Assembly Language. VLIW architecture of BF533 was fully exploited and multi-level code optimization techniques were employed in C and Assembly to reduce the MIPs count for the speech codec. Final optimized solution could run over twenty full-duplex channels of G.729A on ADSP-BF533 platform in real-time.

Design EngineerComm. Enabling Technologies, Islamabad Jan 2001 - Aug 2003IslamabadI worked as a team member on the design of a VLIW media processor for voice over IP applications. I was also part of the team involved in testing and verification of Assembler and Simulator Tools for the media engine. - Our team was involved in the firmware development for various processor architectures that include Motorolla Starcore SC140, ARM926EJS, a VLIW media processor ME2. Speech codecs like G.729, G.728, G.711 and GSM-AMR were ported and optimized on these processors. - Another project included firmware development for a Video phone application for NTT DoCoMo USA. A video conferencing solution composed of porting and optimization of H.263 video codec and G.729 speech codec was ported on StrongARM SA-1110 as well as on Intel P-III processor using Intel Streaming SIMD extensions (SSE).
