My school system, I would later discover, would be one of the poorest and most at-risk youth school systems in the country. Daily, I taught English and Cultural Studies to over 300 high school and middle school students. I also started and coached the schoolβs first debate team that participated in a regional English debate competition. Facing private schools that had exponentially more debate experience and English exposure, our team placed third among eleven. As a result we were interviewed on the local television news, radio, and newspaper. In addition to teaching I became the assistant high school basketball coach. I was also selected from over 100 teachers to assist an administrative group from the Chilean Ministry of Education to organize and plan workshops for Northern Patagonia, inner city and rural schoolteachers. I actively helped design the content of workshops; lead group discussions based on better lesson planning and organized social-networking activities for each cadre of teachers in the area.
