Building scalable services on Kubernetes in the EADP Cloud team to help bring EA games to the world. Among many things, I focus on autoscaling and efficiency, as the architect and owner of EA's custom game server autoscaling technology. In addition, I am a contributor to the open source Kubernetes cluster autoscaler and (unofficially) advised the Karpenter team at AWS.Titles launchedhttps://www.mobygames.com/developer/sheet/view/developerId,903663/Need For Speed: Payback (2017)Star Wars Battlefront II (2017)Battlefield V (2018) (credited as Matt Terry)Plants Vs Zombies: Battle for Neighborville (2019)Star Wars: Squadrons (2020)Battlefield 2042 (2021)Need For Speed: Unbound (2022)EA Sports PGA Tour (2023)

Originally known as Loop Commerce, which was acquired by Synchrony Financial in June 2018.As one of the first 3 engineers at Loop Commerce, I was responsible for many key components of the SaaS platform, creating the technology solution that powers gifting on sites such as Macy's, Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus, American Giant, and more. One important piece that I owned was the integration with the Demandware e-commerce platform (now Salesforce Commerce Cloud). I also worked directly with many partners, owning the technical relationship from on-boarding to post-launch.Loop Commerce powers gifting for retailers and redefines the way consumers purchase and send gifts, as well as the way recipients experience receiving them. Loop™ is an enterprise-grade SaaS platform and turnkey checkout solution that seamlessly integrates with a retailer's online store and essentially makes every product easily giftable. Buyers can purchase any product as a gift without the usual constraints, such as delivery time, or knowing the recipient’s style, color, size or shipping address. Recipients receive notifications of their gifts, and are directed to the retailer’s online store to accept them. Recipients can then configure gifts to suit their preferences, or 'virtually exchange' them online for something else before they ship to the address of their choosing. Retailers leverage this new way of gifting to increase sales, customer acquisition, reduce the costs of returns and exchanges, and gain actionable insights from customer data. With $30 million investment from PayPal and other strategic investors who are influential individuals notable for their significant contributions to retail, technology and finance, Loop was recognized by Forbes magazine as one of “12 innovative companies moving global commerce forward.”
As the platform architect and lead server engineer, I designed and implemented a new REST micro-services platform for mobile games. Functionality included user management, matchmaking, in-app purchases, push notifications, in-game mail, clan support, achievements and scores via Facebook API, live chat, auctions, game administration, and abuse mitigation.Apoc Wars was launched 2 months ahead of schedule using this platform in May 2013 and was featured on Apple's App Store, generating hundreds of thousands of installs during its first week available, eventually growing to 100k DAU. This success lead to the acquisition of gloops by Nexon, after which the next major success, DomiNations used the same game server platform that I created and reached well over 1 million DAU.Technologies used included Java, Spring, Go, MySQL, Redis, and Memcached, built on AWS.
Promoted to Tech Lead in January 2012, I was responsible for managing the game services and operations teams.Additionally, as the Principal Engineer, I led the server engineering team and coordinated development with the client team.Technologies used include Java, Spring, MySQL, Hibernate, MongoDB, and Amazon Web Services (EC2, S3).
Lead server engineer on Dusk, a turn-based fantasy fighting game on Facebook. The game was released in April, 2012.Prior to that, I was the lead server engineer for Wrestler: Unstoppable, the most popular wrestling game on Facebook.Technologies used include Java, Spring, MySQL, Hibernate, memcached, and Amazon Web Services (EC2, S3, SimpleDB, SQS)
