Research Assistant, Doctoral CandidateMassachusetts Institute Of Technology -- Institute For Soldier Nanotechnologies (Isn) Aug 2003 - Jun 2007Cambridge, Ma, UsDissertation Title: “Latent Heat Fluxes Through Nano-Engineered Porous Materials”Barriers of micro- and nano-scale polymer truss provide mechanical strength, light weight, and breatheability. Liquid evaporation and vapor transport through truss voids (pores) cools surfaces covered by the barriers, providing simultaneous protection from mechanical and thermal insult. One application is desert Soldier protection. Design of real systems employing this technique requires quantitative understanding of vapor transport within the truss pores and accompanying latent heat lift under ambient temperature and pressure. This research clarified how nanometer diameter pores affect surface cooling and water vapor transport owing to fluid rarefaction. Contrasting previous studies where pressure within capillaries of fixed diameter was modulated, here Knudsen Number (Kn) was systematically varied by changing pore diameter at constant pressure (one atmosphere). Cooling efficacy was assessed for porous membranes by simulating combined daytime desert solar and metabolic thermal load on humans. A new technique of continuously weighing the entire evaporation apparatus was developed, resulting it intrinsic pore diffusion coefficients for dilute water vapor in air deduced for barrier of varying pore diameter ranging from 39 to 14,400 nm.My responsibilities and accomplishments include:• Served as senior research student on U.S. Army-funded systems integration project to protect dismounted infantrymen• Invented new nanotechnology-enabled technique for simultaneous protection and surface cooling, 3 papers resulted• Utilized scanning electron microscopy to characterize and image porous membranes with features down to 100 nm.• Designed in Solidworks & built apparatus to simulate desert heat/mass transfer through porous membranes• Formulated integrated heat and mass transfer model in MATLAB to accurately predict performance of this system -
Research Assistant, Master'S Degree CandidateMassachusetts Institute Of Technology -- Institute For Soldier Nanotechnologies (Isn) Aug 2001 - Jul 2003Cambridge, Ma, UsThesis Title: “Development of a Cold End and High-Efficiency Valves for a One-Watt 10 Kelvin Cryocooler”This research presented the first comprehensive mechanical design for a feasible cold end unit capable of executing the expander portion of the coldest stage of a multistage Collins cycle cryocooler. The device developed is a working demonstration prototype for a future three-stage space-based cryocooler capable of lifting one Watt at 10 Kelvin.Emphasis was placed on development of the cryogenic cold valves and their integration into the cold end. An evolutionary design iteration process based on finite-element modeling was pioneered and posited to convergence to optimal valve geometry via computer modeling without the necessity of building or testing hardware. An experimental process for static benchmarking of the valves was also described, and sensitivity of the valves to various geometric tolerances was explored. A finite element model was combined with other analytical models and utilized to develop a series of first-order modeling approximations for several aspects of the cold end operation and performance. My responsibilities and accomplishments include:• Served as senior research student on industry/university/Army cryocooler miniaturization SBIR Phase 1. This team won a Phase II SBIR award to continue the work.• Applied finite element design using QuickField to converge upon optimal electro-magnetic (EM) valve geometry• Designed and conducted experiments to measure and quantify static performance of cryogenic EM valves• Built working prototype cryocooler (controlled using LabView) – integrated EM valves with cryocooler cold end -
