Michael Trautmann-Rodriguez Email and Phone Number
First Year in the University of Delaware's Chemical Engineering Ph.D. program focused on developing novel immunotherapies.Immunotherapies take advantage of existing biological mechanisms within our bodies' immune systems and trigger these pathways to target and treat various diseases. My research focuses on engineering nanoparticles that can manipulate the phenotypical balance of macrophages to induce a more favorable response from the immune system, centering around treating various types of maladies found in the lungs through direct delivery of aerosolized nanoparticles. My diverse academic and research background grants me the perspective to holistically tackle this topic, pulling from my previous research in determining novel gene targets for targeted therapies for breast cancer, my B.S. in chemical and biomolecular engineering, and my current education. This background allows me to select new nanoparticle chemistry for more precise control of macrophage response and to develop a mechanistic description of the pathways we exploit. I remain grateful and excited for the mentorship of my academic advisor, Dr. Catherine Fromen, whose insights in nanoparticle design and immunotherapies provide extraordinary guidance.

Graduate Student ResearcherUniversity Of Delaware Sep 2021 - PresentNewark, Delaware, United StatesI am advised by Dr. Catherine Fromen. My research centers on developing and characterizing new nanoparticles for immunotherapy, aiming to manipulate macrophage response to better address lung-centric diseases. -
Teaching AssistantThe Johns Hopkins University Jan 2019 - May 2021Baltimore, Maryland, United StatesI assisted Dr. Sakul Ratanalert in the teaching of "Introduction to Process Chemistry." I would lead weekly sections, guiding 10 to 12 students through an active learning worksheet centered on principal chemical engineering skills such as mass and energy balances. -
Undergraduate Research AssistantThe Johns Hopkins University Jan 2018 - May 2021Baltimore, Maryland, United StatesI worked under the advisement of Dr. Daniele Gilkes. My research centered on determining novel pathways in which to develop targetted therapies for breast cancer, with a focus on the microenvironment of tumor sights. -
Clinical Laboratory AssistantCurative Jun 2020 - Aug 2020Washington, District Of Columbia, United StatesWorked as a clinical lab assistant 1 for a COVID testing site during the height of the pandemic. I would sterilize and sort patient samples, alongside preparing samples for PCR-testing.
