The Cementitious Materials Group is concerned with all types of cement, not just those used in construction, but applications spanning from tissue scaffolds to nuclear waste isolation. I was associated with MIRO for over ten years working latterly as a Research Manager in mineral processing technology and applied thermodynamics. I worked as a Principal Research Fellow in the Department of Chemical Engineering and was involved with molten salt technology for mineral refining. This project "Optimise" was lead by MIRO and conducted in the CO2 Centre at UCL.In addition, I collaborate with colleagues in the Materials Chemistry Centre on synchrotron methods, particularly as they apply.

As a visiting Research Fellow at Greenwich, I have taught cement science for several years as part of an M.Sc. course in Geomaterials. I have supervised several research students particularly in the chemistry of cements in aggressive environments, such as organic acid attack and during rapid carbonation.I work mainly with colleagues in the Earth Sciences.

Mini-Waste was a Faraday Partnership between Imperial, Cambridge and Birmingham universities and C-Tech innovation and was funded by the DTI, NERC and EPSRC. It’s objective was to minimize industrial waste arisings in the UK through improved resource efficiency and re-use. The parnership was highly successful and at its conclusion, held a research budget.

At Atkins, I was involved in contract research and consultancy into cement chemistry and geochemistry, particularly for the nuclear waste industry. Much of our group’s work was on behalf of the UK nuclear regulators (HMIP and the Environment Agency) in support of their Disposal Assessments activities. This divided equally between contract research.

At Birmingham, I was involved in studies of contamination of an urban aquifer by heavy metals and organic solvents. This involved vadose zone sampling of volatile organics and dissolved metals and their subsequent analysis. This project considered both soil gas analysis, detecting volatile organics in the near surface environment and more conventional.

Whilst thesis-writing, I worked part time for the City of Birmingham as science lecturer, principally in Chemistry at Sutton College, but also in Medical Laboratory Science, Dental Technology, Print Science and Analytical Chemistry at Matthew Boulton College.

At BGS, I worked on fixed-term contracts for the Fluids Processes Unit, initially at the AERE Harwell Laboratory in Oxfordshire and subsequently at the headquarters in Keyworth.
