The most senior executive in an organisation is usually referred to as either the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) or the Managing Director (MD). These terms are often used interchangeably but there are differences in their responsibilities. The CEO is the operational head and the board’s employee; an MD fulfils this CEO role but is also a board member, i.e. MD is an Executive Director.
