  I went to law school at Southwestern Law after graduating from UCLA with a degree in Political Science/International Relations.I had envisioned myself going into the foreign service, being an ambassador to some exotic, far-away place; it seemed that most ambassadors were lawyers, so off I went. I found out it didn’t quite work that way, but in the meantime became intrigued by something that I had seen in a courthouse in Los Angeles.During my third year of law school, I was working at the courthouse in downtown L.A. where the federal criminal trial of Rodney King was being held. When I wasn’t busy, I was able to sit in the courtroom and watch the lawyers and trial proceedings.One lawyer in particular caught my attention. He was Michael Stone, the attorney for one of the L.A.P.D. officers on trial. He commanded authority, had great trial skills and was knowledgeable and persuasive; he was the one to watch.The following year, I sat alongside him as his second chair, defending the same officers in the civil rights trial Mr. King had brought against them and the City of Los Angeles.
