David Murphy has 30 years of experience in music and audiovisual rights management. Over the years, he has developed expertise in rights management methods and business practices relating to the use and exploitation of musical compositions and commissioned music.He began his career as an employee of SODRAC (Society for reproduction rights of authors, composers and publishers in Canada), and later worked for Éditions Musi-Art.In 1997, David Murphy founded David Murphy et Cie, a company specializing in the management of music rights and retransmission rights (audiovisual works). His role involves representing and defending the interests of the company's clients with a view to increasing the value of their assets.In addition to his business, he was Assistant General Manager (2000 to 2004) of SOPROQ(Quebec Collective Society for the Rights of Makers of Sound Recordings and Music Videos). He was an elected member of SODRAC's Board of Directors and served on the Executive Committee.He was also a member of the Board of Directors of the Professional Music Publishers’ Association (APEM) from 2008 to 2016 and served as its president between 2010 and 2014. He also served on the Boards of Directors at Musicaction from 2012 to 2018 and the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame from 2015 to 2017.Contracted by APEM and ADISQ as a trainer, he offers (or has offered) the following training courses:- Types of rights and sources of revenue - collective and individual management- Negotiating a publishing contract (in collaboration with Me Claude Brunet)- The use of musical compositions in audiovisuals and copyright permission and rates- Online shows: understanding the rights and roles of each stakeholder (in collaboration with Me Sophie Hébert)He was the recipient of the Christopher-J.-Reed Prize (presented by APEM) in 2015.
