I have almost totally retired from my career as a Canadian privacy law consultant and expert on PIPEDA application for private sector companies. My career as a consultant began in 1997 following a down-sizing from my position as Director of Telecommunications policy with a satellite carrier (Telesat Mobile Inc.) in Ottawa. My career until that time had included years in advertising and marketing as creative director with several ad agencies, director of communications with a Crown Corporation, a career in marketing, public affairs and regulatory affairs with Telesat Canada (another satellite carrier) and with Stentor Telecom Policy Inc., a government and regulatory affairs group working on behalf of Canada's major telcos. At Stentor I became lead authority on privacy issues affecting Canada's major telecommunications carriers and participated in the development of a new privacy standard for Canada through a working group of the Canadian Standards association. This standard (CSA Model Code for the Protection of Personal Information) became the basis for new private sector data protection law in Canada, and in 1997 I became a consultant based on the expert knowledge I had gained working on this code. This expertise was bolstered by my work for Industry Canada's in developing new privacy law(PIPEDA) based on the code and this, along with co-authoring a book on PIPEDA, led to a successful consulting career, including as a communicator of information about PIPEDA through my own publication (www.privacyscan.ca)I sold PrivacyScan in 2009 prior to moving to Perth, Ontario but continued to write for it until June 2014. This means I now have far more time for woodworking and motorcycle riding.
