About Alistair Murray Ceng
An experienced aerospace and composites automation researcher who has secured funding from national and international R&D funding schemes and led numerous collaborative engineering projects from concept to completion. I have ensured significant savings and quality gains for the AMRC and our customers by continually optimising equipment, operational practices and web-based systems.Since 2014, I have led most of AMRC's Automated Fibre Placement (AFP) activities: winning grant and commercial funding; tendering for over £600k of hardware; optimising machine setups, maintenance and our approaches to program creation and data collection; and the layup of many complex thermoset, dry fibre and thermoplastic laminates. I've enthusiastically trained up several others regarding many of these activities and am regularly called upon by staff and externals for specialist advice, trend predictions and quotes. In this period I have advanced AMRC capabilities in relation to many of the most prominent industrial AFP challenges, with high economic and environmental implications, including: lightweighting, in-process inspection, numerical curvilinear design, complex geometry thermoplastic processing and in-situ consolidation.I am a distinguished, creative problem solver. In recent years I've also coded and introduced numerous cloud-based operational systems (JavaScript, HTML, MySQL, Python 3), resulting in productivity step changes, some reducing weekly efforts and stress for 100s of staff.I've otherwise gained vast composites design and manufacturing knowledge from hand-ons experience with:- Many processes, including prepreg and wet filament winding of pressure vessels (e.g. for hydrogen storage), pressing, Double Diaphragm Forming (DDF), Resin Transfer Moulding (RTM), autoclaving and automated cutting.- Design and manufacture of multifunctional structures, e.g. integration of several styles of ice protection systems into nacelle and aircraft wing leading edges.- Many mechanical, NDT and visual tests to assess material properties, defects and damage.- Fibre reinforced polymers, fibre metal laminates and sandwich panels. - Synthetic and bio fibres including: carbon, glass, Kevlar, Zylon, flax and bamboo.- Conventional and bioresins - a PFA and one partially derived from cashew nut shell liquid.
Listed skills include Composites, Manufacturing, Teamwork, Team Leadership, and 25 others.

Research Engineer
Employed to recommission the ballistics lab at the University of British Columbia, my primary role was to update an internally created legacy program for the Enhanced Laser Velocity System to run in the latest LabVIEW environment and communicate with several new high-speed data acquisition instruments. Following the software and hardware upgrade, the new.
Development Engineer
As a development engineer at the UK’s flagship Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre I led several projects focused on biocomposite materials. Between June and November I was able to survey the natural fibre market, source materials from global suppliers, develop CAD designs for products and tooling, and ultimately manufacture several automobile spoilers.
Research Student
Here I manufactured and tested hybrid laminates of carbon fibre and amorphous steel, of a varying number of layers and metal volume fraction, to access their ballistic performance and retention of strength after impact. Experimenting with fragments traveling between 125 and 1000 m/s I was able to validate a theoretical calculation I had made of the.
