In partnership with Edinburgh University, and with frequent collaboration with managers at Baillie Gifford, an opportunity arose to gain research experience regarding the investment performance of environmentally innovative equity portfolios. Such portfolios were formed using natural language processing techniques, with data from global patent databases. Using an analytical factor investment approach, results show that there is broad underperformance of such innovative portfolios.
