I am a lecturer in Product Design at the National College of Art and Design and former Director of Undergraduate Studies in Design Innovation at Maynooth University, Inventor of the world first, cantilevered saddle and co-founder of the consultancy firm thinkactionable.com which specialises in building consumer insight and delivering innovation in product and services. Through this firm I have worked closely with a broad range of clients from insurance to healthcare and from leading technology companies to government agencies. For my work in design and innovation I have received a number of awards which I am very proud of, but three I hold dearest which include; the JEC World Innovation Award (Paris), Dyson Design Award and ISPO Volvo sport Design Award finalist (Munich). Both innovation and design are fast evolving fields. My main research interests centre on Design-driven Innovation, Strategy and Design Thinking and I am currently a lead editor of Irelands only design journal, Iterations.In practice and education I emphasise the upfront processes that seed and drive innovation. I use design thinking methodologies as the conduit to structure and organise the innovation process, but I draw extensively on social science methodologies, strategy tools, broader psychology and behavioural economic theories to unlock and build new insights and ultimately clarify the problem to be solved.
