When it comes to functionality, we just cannot beat nature's design. Looking at nature for inspiration, I have investigated methods of combating pathogenic bacteria present in nature. This research pointed me in the direction of engineered roughnesses in the shape of micro and nano-patterns; such patterns interfere with bioadhesion through purely physical means. I was also drawn into quorum sensing, a method of communication in bacteria, and subsequently, interfering with and disrupting quorum sensing. Quorum sensing has been linked to biofilm coordination and virulent gene expression, and through the use of a quorum sensing inhibitor, bacterial colonization on surfaces can be suppressed through chemical means. Seeing that the two methods worked differently, I hypothesized that a material infused with a quorum sensing inhibitor and with an engineered micropattern on its surface would have an enhanced effect in suppressing bacterial growth. I tested my hypothesis on PDMS silicone, a material commonly used in manufacturing medical devices as catheters and dialysis tubes, and found that combining the physical and chemical defense mechanisms together proved to better combat the growth of bacteria listed in the WHO's Priority Pathogens List. This research is significant as medical devices are at high risk of bacterial colonization, which commonly spreads infections and adverse reactions, especially when it comes down to bacteria on the WHO's Priority Pathogens list that are resistant or fast becoming resistant to multiple common antibiotics.
