About Mike Van Zandt, Csp
I've been in the software industry for eight years. In that time, I've gone from a junior quality assurance tester and help desk technician to a lead software developer to an Agile Coach and Scrum Master. In that time, I've created software that is still used everyday, and lead projects which were critical to the success of my company. I've driven change from a group of process driven waterfall engineers and testers, to cross-functional teams which embrace Agile to deliver value rapidly to users and customers. I thought I would always be a developer... until I found Agile. Once we made the decision to go Agile, I went all in on coaching, and never looked back. I love to find the little wins. If people are happier at 5 PM then they were at 9 AM, I feel I've done my job well. I love the challenge of leading with no authority, because when people follow you know they believe. I'm a reformed command-and-controller.I am versed in Scrum, XP, Crystal, Kanban and a host of other Agile Disciplines. I advocate for automated unit testing, vertical story slicing and so many more best practices. I don't rest until teams not only understand what they're doing, but why they're doing it. I love to challenge my teams not only to consistently set and meet goals towards delivering greater value to users, but to grow themselves individually. I teach my teams that transparency equals trust, so they should be consistent in showing their progress. I've formed, disbanded and re-formed teams. I relentlessly attack blockers & impediments. I cannot abide the phrases "That's the way we've always done it" and "just tell me how to do it". It doesn't matter to me to who needs to be engaged, I work in the Executive Suite or where ever they shove the junior devs. I expect nothing but the best; I expect people to deliver value and excellence at all times, not to overwork themselves at one point only to burn out and crash.
