Patent Analyst

Current

Evanston, Illinois, United States

I am executing PCT searches for patents relating to chemistry with a focus on pharmaceutical compositions and methods. I scour the literature using PatBase, PubMed, Google Scholar, and Google Patents to determine if recently submitted patent applications are presenting a novel invention. I write and organize my opinion for the ISR, commenting on the novelty, inventive steps, and industrial applicability of the claims for the USPTO.

I was an active participant in a cross functional team that was designing, analyzing, and producing novel pan-coronavirus therapeutics in search for a clinical candidate. As a medicinal chemist, I aided in the development of the Arbutus patent portfolio, adding to the library of novel structures. I scoured the literature for biological data of multiple different scaffolds that could be used on our potential compounds as well as our own database of compounds that could be adapted to the desired core structure. I conducted the analyses and documentation of all experiments and compounds produced, as well as prepared the data and protocols for patent publication. Along with my own syntheses, I also schemed separate compounds for our contract research organizations (CRO) to produce and assisted in troubleshooting any of the problems that were presented. I also assisted the process group of taking the accepted clinical candidate and performing the initial scale ups of the active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs). Show less

Senior Scientist

Bristol, Pa

As a member of the research and development team of the CRO Abzena, I designed and synthesized a number of small molecules to advance the project of our clients. The main focus of my work was to derivatize natural products and use them to prepare linker-payloads that the Bioconjugation team used to produce antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs). While the majority of the work was finishing the proposed structures from the clients, I also suggested and completed novel compounds that I saw would benefit… Show more As a member of the research and development team of the CRO Abzena, I designed and synthesized a number of small molecules to advance the project of our clients. While the majority of the work was finishing the proposed structures from the clients, I also suggested and completed novel compounds that I saw would benefit the objectives of the clients. On top of small molecule synthesis, I optimized, scaled up, and tested a reaction in a reactor in preparation for using the protocol in the GMP suite. The new procedure for the API required less manipulation and no purification outside of filtering the solid. Along with the synthetic work, I maintained the instrumentation the chemists used for daily analysis as well as being the point person for the new Waters AQUITY system, performing early troubleshooting and reaching out to the experts for any potential errors. Researcher

Evanston, Illinois

As a graduate and post-doctoral researcher, I worked on numerous projects pursuing novel small molecules based on the project goals. I made a number of naturally occurring and closely related prodiginine alkaloids examining the biosynthetic pathways of such structures. I produced isotopologues of alpha-pinene to examine the surface properties of secondary organic aerosols with our atmospheric chemistry collaborators. I designed the syntheses of regioisomers of isoprene-derived organosulfates… Show more As a graduate and post-doctoral researcher, I worked on numerous projects pursuing novel small molecules based on the project goals. I designed the syntheses of regioisomers of isoprene-derived organosulfates that I conducted and mentored a graduate student through. Throughout this time, I also assisted in the preparation of multiple articles and funding proposals as well as my own NIH funding proposal that was granted. Here is where I learned multiple analytical methods from NMR, LCMS, HPLC, GCMS, and IR that I would go on to use in my career. Show less
