About Madeleine Lee

I am an experienced research assistant and trained librarian who specializes in information retrieval and organization. With the Internet making it easier for people to throw views and information out there, a librarian’s ability to identify the best sources is more critical than ever. If you want the information found the first time, and organized and presented in a way that is straightforward and easy to understand, I am the person who can do it. My ideal job would combine my skills as a librarian with my interest in biology and health sciences research.

I was hired to create a model license agreement for electronic resources subscribed to by the Library. This four-month project involved setting my own goals and schedule on a day-to-day basis while keeping my end date and specific requirements in mind. I began the project by gathering as much information about model licenses and the licensing process as I could find. To accomplish this, I used information from model license websites, as well as keyword searches in general information and library and information databases. I also spoke with senior librarians involved in acquisition and maintenance of e-resources to get an understanding of the Library’s specific needs in the licensing process. During the periods where I was waiting for feedback from others, I sought out other ways to assist the senior librarians. I took on a variety of tasks, including updating records in Millenium and contacting patrons through email to coordinate database training sessions.

I provided administrative and research support to the primary investigator and other senior research staff of the California Smokers’ Helpline. My research support duties included performing literature searches and presenting summaries of those findings, organizing and performing preliminary analysis on data, and preparing grant materials. I also made research contributions to long-term projects. One of these projects was an exploratory project focused on identifying and cataloging the various brands of e-cigarettes that were for sale on the Internet. I created search guidelines and instructed student interns in their use, monitoring their progress on assigned tasks and providing feedback as needed. I maintained an Excel database of our results and presented findings to my supervisor and other senior research staff. I presented the results from this project as a poster at the 2013 Society for Research on Nicotine and Tobacco (SRNT) Conference. My administrative duties included handling all requests for outside information, setting up meetings and taking notes, managing schedules, and reviewing and editing correspondence. I used my own judgment when balancing these administrative duties with long-term projects contributing to the office’s research. This often included addressing immediate concerns and assisting other staff members with diverse tasks.
