About Michelle Voytko Eisenhart

Environmental conservation is more than conserving existing ecosystems and habitats, it is about ensuring a sustainable, healthy, and diverse world for future generations. One way to ensure this is through ecological restoration, renewing and restoring ecosystems and species that have been destroyed, degraded, or effected through various human interactions and creating a more co-habitable environment between wildlife and people. Ecological restoration will also promote natural ecosystem services like coastal protection from storms and could make previously uninhabitable areas habitable. I grew up in Charleston, SC and went to Clemson University for my degree in Environment and Natural Resources with a concentration in Conservation Biology. Growing up in Charleston, I was able to see how extensive human expansion can be to the environment and how storms can take a toll on the natural ecosystems. The amount of wildlife roadkill and flooding events increased with a decrease in safety corridors and natural filtration, the amount of beach erosion caused by coastal storms increased, and the presence of litter degraded the quality of the surrounding ecosystem. One of the first projects that got me interested in ecological restoration was the restoration of oyster beds in the surrounding coastal areas. Seeing how much the restoration efforts have worked in Charleston, I wanted to take on the task of being apart of a project that makes a difference.

Listed skills include Gis Systems, Microsoft Office, Conservation Biology, Microsoft Word, and 13 others.

Research Laboratory Technician

Clemson, South Carolina

Researched the sexual selection of female Sailfin Mollies to see if mate selection was more influenced by nature or nurture. The trials included raising Sailfin Mollies in four different environmental situations: in complete isolation, in a shared tank with one large male and two females, in a shared tank with one small male, and one shared tank with three females. These situations were designed to see if the preference for large males was innate or if it was a learned preference. To test the preference of the females upon maturity, we set up a tank that was divided in three sections where the female was in the middle with two different males on either side. We used the amount of time spent with each male to determined preference. Our data showed that mate selection was significant when the females were raised with large males and females, but not when they were raised with smaller males. Our data also showed that the apathy (the amount of time spent not near a male) decreased in the females that were raised in isolation the more that they were exposed to males. This could be concluded that a preference for a male is not innate, but is learned overtime with exposure. This research project was awarded first place at the 2015 SEPEEG Conference in Athens, Georgia for Undergraduate Research.
