Design Engineering Student
For my final co-op term at Multimatic, I worked as a design engineering student in the mechanisms department at the Multimatic Technical Centre (MTC). Depending on the client, I would work with the CAD programs CATIA and NX to create and update 3D models and drawings for automotive parts such as door checks, hinges, linkages, and drivetrain components for an active rear wing. Drawings were created for large-scale production, so GD&T callouts were critical to ensuring all parts were produced within tolerance. Other methods of analysis performed with CAD models were tolerance stacks and FEA. Another project I worked on was developing an excel spreadsheet that could easily calculate how much energy would be required to close a door from a certain position depending on the door check profile. This was constructed from a MathCAD document that required updating.
Testing Engineering Student
During my fifth co-op term and first co-op term with Multimatic, I worked as a testing engineering student in the testing department at the Multimatic Technical Centre (MTC). Over the time spent in the testing department, I performed and set up tests for a variety of components. This includes automatic door presenters which can be found in many modern vehicles and was done using a Somat eDAQ and Arduino. I also assembled a variety of fixtures for endurance testing including a 270° Door hinge, O-ring seal, and cooling pump. After running the required number of testing cycles, components require a tear-down to assess the wear on the interior hardware. I performed teardowns on various components including dampers and power door units. Finally, I performed and documented force tests on various composite bonding samples using an Instron Testing System.
Ait Development Assistant
In my fourth co-op term, I worked at the Canadian Space Agency as an AIT development assistant in their David Florida Laboratory (DFL). Most of this coop term was spent researching and report writing using past documentation on lunar seismic activity and how that could affect the design of lunar systems and structures. This was done by examining lunar seismic data inversion techniques used to improve the understanding of the lunar surface and interior. The viability of lunar lava tubes as potential habitats was also analyzed because of their protection from radiation, thermal gradient, and lunar dust. The information gathered was documented in an updated internal report which was subsequently presented at the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Earth and Space conference in April of 2021. Other tasks performed on this co-op term included performing risk analysis by Identifying, analyzing, and discussing mitigation techniques for risks facing the DFL.
Sailing Instructor And Race Coach
In my third co-op term, I took off from a conventional engineering position and worked as a sailing instructor and race coach at the Stony Lake Yacht Club. This was a position I worked in the summer before university and found very rewarding. Some hands-on related tasks for this job included completing extensive maintenance on boats including fiber-glass repairs, riveting, and boat rigging replacements. Additionally, I educated young sailors about sailing physics, properties of wind, and racing tactics and how to apply skills on the water. I gave these sailors opportunities to test their skills by coaching them while competing at sailing events around southern Ontario. This sometimes-included trailering sailboats to and from venues. For the weekend races of our home club, I managed the setup, governing, and scoring.
Junior Test Cell Engineer
In my Second co-op term, I worked at the National Research Council as a Junior Test Cell Engineer in their Gas Turbine Laboratory (GTL). During my time there my focus was on researching, modeling, and documenting a new fuel supply system for testing flashback occurrences during the combustion of gas turbines. This system was modeled and documented with drawings using Solidworks. Another smaller project I worked on during my time there was designing a pressure test block machined and implemented for testing the airflow of fuel injectors. Other tasks I worked on included preparing prototype parts for testing by connecting thermocouples and pressure sensors via spot welding. I also would prepare combustion chambers for operation by applying sealants, assembling components, and doing leak testing. Finally, I updated a few of the Test Cells Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) with Microsoft Visio.
Process Engineering Intern
In my first co-op term, I worked for IKO industries as a Reliability Engineering Intern at their subsidiary IG Machine and Fibers. The most significant assignment for this job was updating the Standard Operating Procedures documentation for all production lines throughout the plant. Production lines would manufacture a variety of rollout roofing materials. This was done by combining the old documentation with information from consulting current operators. This required me to develop a strong understanding of how all production lines in the plant work and what they are capable of manufacturing. Images were taken to make step-by-step graphics to ensure an understanding of how tasks are to be performed. In addition to this, I would analyze daily production line numbers and diagnose recurring downtime issues that affected the facility's productivity. From these production issues, I would implement work orders for fixing issues that were causing recurring downtime.
