About Maciej Walerowski

In July 2021, I have completed my MChem degree at Loughborough University and was awarded a 1st class degree. I was also awarded a diploma in industrial studies for my year long placement at Reckitts. I am currently undertaking a PhD in Chemistry at the University of Southampton. My research is focused on the development of hybrid catalytic systems which can convert carbon dioxide into commercially useful fuels. In the summer of 2019, I undertook a research project focusing on the synthesis, characterisation and utilization of copper catalysts. This project was funded by the Loughborough University School of Science. Before this, I have completed a yearlong placement at Reckitts where I had the opportunity to work in the Gaviscon R&D team as a formulation Chemist. The year in industry has allowed me to develop further a plethora of skills, gain hands on experience in industry and witness first hand how various categories such as R&D, supply, quality and marketing link together to deliver a successful product onto the market.Throughout my time at University I have won an accolade of awards such as the 'Most Engaged Student' and 'Chemistry Progression Part A and Part B Prize' and 'MChem Finalist Prize' for achieving the highest results in my year. I also have had the opportunity to become a Programme President which allowed me to represent the views of my fellow students. Such a prestigious position enabled me to shape change within the course which translated to an improvement in the student experience at the University. I also held a role as a Peer Mentor Student Coordinator which saw me coordinate a highly dedicated group of Peer Mentors that supported first-year students during their transition to the University. During my third and fourth year, I was also a School of Science Student Helper and took part in various University open days and applicant visit days. In my final year, I obtained the status of a Registered Scientist (RSci).

    • Led guided tours around the campus for prospective students and their parents. I planned the routes to maximise viewing of various facilities in a limited time frame. • I interacted with the visitors and answered any questions they had about life at Loughborough University, signposting them to other staff members if I was unable to answer their question.• During the welcome presentations, I presented my placement experience and showcased how the Loughborough Careers Network helped me to secure a placement. • I was involved in online Q&A sessions about my university experience during virtual open days.

    • As part of this placement I synthesised various copper compounds using approaches which I devised, I then characterised the compounds before and after an organic reaction to ensure they are true-catalysts and I analysed the products of the catalysed reaction. • For each experiment I was expected to write my own Risk Assessment, Method Statement and COSHH assessment to ensure that my proposed experiment adhered to strict safety regulations. • I was able to gain experience in the use of Thermal Gravimetric Analysis and Differential Scanning Calorimetry, Powder X-ray Diffraction, Fourier Transform Infrared using Caesium Iodide discs, Centrifugation and Gas Chromatography linked to a Mass Spectrum analyser. • Some reactions were performed under an inert atmosphere which enabled me to gain greater experience in synthesis under a nitrogen atmosphere.• I gained further experience in general lab practice such as cleaning, safe storage and appropriate waste disposal.• I was also expected to identify the most suitable reactants for a given reaction and I had to order them in a timely manner.

    • This role was to provide support on a wide range of formulation projects for NPD within the Gaviscon brand, from concept to launch.• Working as part of the Gaviscon Core team, this role included a mixture of lab and office-based assignments in support of the R&D teams. • Lab based tasks included a range of practical tasks including activities such as manufacture of liquid and solid doses at lab and larger scales, testing (colour, raft strength, viscosity, hardness, friability) and development of new test methods.• Office-based tasks included writing risk assessments, control of raw materials availability (ordering, booking, requesting documentation), presentations, management of stability studies and review of data.• This placement provided the opportunity to learn about how the business works, product development and the range of techniques used by other teams.• As part of one of the projects, I was involved in regular cross-functional meetings. This exposed me to the various steps and requirements of developing a product from conception to release.• In May 2019, I was awarded the Gaviscon ‘Superhero of the month’ for my contributions to the projects as well as my work in the Year in Industry forum and raw materials.
