  • Shared Spectrum
Director Of Platform And Software Engineering
    Shared Spectrum Jul 2004 - Feb 2006
    Vienna, Va, Us
    • Technical Manager for the DARPA XG Phase III Program.• Technical Volume Lead Author for the DARPA XG Phase III Proposal• Software Engineering Manager for the DARPA XG Phase II ProgramXG was a revolutionary approach to wireless networking which demonstrated the feasibility of Dynamic Spectrum Access (essentially the basis of Google's and Microsoft's White Space Coalition). By automatically sensing locally and temporally unused spectrum, XG created a robust mobile ad hoc network (MANET) capable of functioning worldwide without prior location-specific configuration.XG employed a combination of commercial-off-the-shelf 802.11 (Wi-Fi), 802.16 (WiMAX), or software defined radios; spectrum-sensing cognitive radios; a machine-actionable policy language controlling dynamic spectrum access, network configuration, and network management; next generation MANET algorithms; and innovative information dissemination approaches.XG technologies were fast tracked for near-term operational deployment and are purportedly now used in nearly every major current US military radio system.
  • San Diego Research Center, Inc.
    Principal Investigator
San Diego Research Center, Inc. Jan 2004 - Jul 2004
Principal Investigator – DARPA Phase II Program SB022-024 “Design of Mobile, Wireless (Ad Hoc) Networks Using Smart Antennas”.Led a small team that designed and did initial development of a novel Media Access Control (MAC) optimized for mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) whose nodes only used highly directional antennas. This MAC enabled neighbor discovery and network formation with no omnidirectional antennas, a problem that had not previously been solved.During design phase, evaluated the ns-2 ("the Network Simulator"), OPNET, pdns (Parallel/Distributed NS), and QualNet simulation environments. This led to a Phase I contract "A04-027: Modeling and Simulation of Spectral and Spatial Efficiency, Communications Bandwidth and Range Optimization and Security Performance in a Directional Networked Communications Environment".Implementation was done primarily in C and C++ with some additional work in TCL. Simulation efforts were hosted on Linux, MacOS X, and Windows.San Diego Research Center was acquired by Argon ST for $41 million.Argon ST was acquired by Boeing for approximately $775 million.
