About Michael Heinz

I’ve been involved in nearly every aspect of computers, from mainframes to handhelds. I've been involved in free software since the early 1980s, and in the mid-90s I created websites that were mentioned in how-to books and magazines. Software I've written has been included in books on how to write software. Since about 2001 I've been involved in High Performance Computing, most recently focused on fabric network management. My focus is always on creating the best software possible, which means it has to be usable and well documented as well as technically correct.Specialties: Currently C, Linux/Unix, Infiniband, Omnipath

Participated in both the further development of an Ethernet-based HPC networking layer (PSM3) and acted as the lead system administrator for an HPC cluster that was used by Intel and Intel’s customers all over the world. Received fourth Divisional Award for efforts to support benchmarking Intel’s Sapphire Rapids processors. Developed bespoke tools for administering the HPC cluster based on Bash, Ansible, and SLURM.

  • Intel
    High Performance Computing Software Engineer
    Intel Feb 2012 - Oct 2020
    Allentown, Pennsylvania
I'm a senior member of the team designing the management protocols and fabric management software for high performance computing fabrics. (AKA Designing and writing operating software for supercomputers.)This is extremely cool work! I describe it as being like trying to plan rush hour in NYC so that no one ever has to stop for a red light. In 2018 I became the technical lead for a project to scale some of our fabric management software to support future exascale. As part of this effort I designed an API to allow the fabric manager to be converted from single-threaded to parallel-threaded operation without requiring a wholesale rewrite of the existing code base and guided other developers in identifying areas of the fabric management code that would need to be re-designed. This effort led to a 27x improvement in management software performance on a live high performance cluster and my third Divisional Recognition Award.
  • Qlogic
    Principal Software Engineer
    Qlogic Mar 2008 - Jan 2012
I was recently promoted to Principal Software Engineer. Currently I'm working on updated drivers for Infiniband hardware and with MPI, a protocol for performing parallel programming on clusters of computers.
  • Qlogic Corporation / Silverstorm / Infinicon Systems
    Staff Engineer
    Qlogic Corporation / Silverstorm / Infinicon Systems Apr 2004 - Apr 2008
I returned to Infiniconsys because the work was so much more interesting than the work I was doing at Merck. SilverStorm / Infinicon was purchased by QLogic in the fall of 2006; I'm pretty excited about this because QLogic's resources mean that my Infiniband work will continue to grow into new areas. Currently I'm working on updated drivers for Infiniband hardware and with MPI, a protocol for performing parallel programming on clusters of computers.
