Leader of optical, mechanical, and electrical design of Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR), Ultraviolet-Differential Optical Absorption (UV-DOAS), and Raman spectroscopic systems. Primary technical resource for system integration at customer sites. Provide technical support for field technicians to address difficult troubleshooting issues. Provide input on development and debugging of NuWave™, Spectrum’s software suite for data collection and spectral analysis. The main “go-to” person for technical questions or giving feedback for ideas.• Challenged with designing from scratch and building first four UV-DOAS instruments on compressed time schedule to sell to customer. Instruments met monitoring requirements and have been operating continuously since late 2019, with additional units to be installed in 2022.• Designed all FTIR instruments from scratch, taking input from team about features to include.• Designed and built prototype FTIR-Raman instrument, then sold it to customer after demonstration. Customer expressed interest in purchasing additional units.• Collaborated with engineers at major refinery on design and layout of instrument shelters for their network of FTIR and UV-DOAS instruments, as well as additional infrastructure.• Designed sample handling within 19” rack enclosure for 11 FTIR instruments sold to major semiconductor facility.
Round Rock, Tx
Interviewed candidates and hired new Business Manager. Provided final approval on payroll and other payables.
Round Rock, Tx
Tasked with learning as much from the company founders as possible before they retired. Jointly led development of Rapid Total Gas Analyzer, a combination of FTIR and Raman spectroscopy. Trained customers on use and maintenance of FTIRs and IMACC Software Suite. Updated 2D CAD drawings to 3D solid models. Oversaw and standardized retroreflector mirror production.• Managed and performed flare combustion efficiency project for refinery in Alaska. Collected data and generated report showing flare met EPA performance requirements.• Transition to drawings based on 3D models reduced errors and improved manufacturing efficiency.• Identified steps during retroreflector production that improved uniformity and overall angular accuracy.
Designed and built pulsed power system and optical diagnostics for thesis data. Used image processing techniques, especially Fourier analysis, to analyze thesis data. Collaborated with theoretical physicist to create particle-in-cell simulation explaining observed experimental results. Responsible for operation and maintenance of two high-intensity femtosecond laser systems, three Nd:YAG lasers, four vacuum pumps, and two turbo pumps. Simulated, designed, and implemented upgrade of two Ti:Sa amplifiers in one laser system. Wrote LabVIEW data acquisition code for laser filamentation experiment.• Discovered rapid ionization process while collecting research data studying plasma expansion. Collaborated with research scientist utilizing detailed computer simulations to explain source of ionization, resulting in publication in prestigious research journal • Pulsed power system discharged four parallel capacitors simultaneously via a laser-triggered spark gap, up to 30,000 volts with peak current of approximately 70,000 amps in less than a microsecond.• Optical diagnostics consisted of “snapshot” and streaked interferometry with optical delay control of snapshot beam.• Result of upgrade to laser system was ~50% more output energy and improved stability.• Awarded fellowship from National Physical Science Consortium via Sandia National Labs in 2009.
Taught and supervised lab section for Waves and Optics, a mid-level class for Physics majors. Over four semesters, average student survey results rated teaching performance 4/5.• Independently added real-world application discussion to each weekly lab in second year of teaching, which was well received.
