About Megan Wa Mukuria

Experienced Founder and systems influencer with a demonstrated history of working in non-profits and business in Kenya. Successfully built ZanaAfrica from ideation into a recognized leader internationally in gender equity, health systems strengthening, and menstrual health. We have creating holistic and intersectional impact in menstrual heath management through policy, product innovation, sales of consumer goods, school-based delivery of health and rights education, and social and behavior change communication that benefits over 70,000 monthly. ZanaAfrica’s proven curriculum intervention, developed from over a decade of listening to girls and their families, changes gender norms and reproductive health knowledge permanently for adolescents in just 18 months and is being scaled up with KICD into all national schools, with plans for multi-country expansion. Our sanitary pads, under the brand name Nia, are sold in commercial markets across 38 counties. We have our own patentable intellectual property for local manufacturing and are currently raising blended capital to reach 1 million consumers by 2026, with Vitol Foundation as our anchor investor. My experience spans human-centered design, talent recruitment, strategic planning, ecosystem building, fundraising, board building and governance, leadership in both for- and non-profits, and more. I have lived in Kenya now for over 22 years and have been recognized for my leadership locally and internationally, being a graduate of FastForward, East Africa's Premiere Leadership Program, as well as an Ashoka Fellow since 2007, and a Boerhinger Ingelheim Making More Health Fellow amongst other fellowships. I have given numerous TED-style keynotes and have shifted governments and funders priorities in menstrual, sexual, and reproductive health and rights.

  • Zanaafrica Group Ltd
    Founder And Ceo
Zanaafrica Group Ltd Oct 2008 - Present
    Nairobi, Kenya
A social enterprise working to promote and scale-up African-led innovation in the areas of education, health and the environment. Based in Nairobi, we are creating a national, sustainable and replicable solution to solve the problem of sanitary pads for the 4 in 5 girls in school and women at the base of the pyramid who current lack access to affordable, dignified ways to manage their periods.Every Nia pad connects customers to free digital health partners to improve access and actualization to full health rights. I coined term "Fast Moving Educational Good" for what FMCGs could be if they put customer needs first on pad packaging. 2019 sales grew 3x from 2018 due to transition to from commercial pilots to scaling. Nia pads are now exclusively distributed by Eveready East Africa. Our IP leverages diversified agri-waste materials on commercial machines to support local supply chains. • Zanaafrica Programs
    Founder And Board Member
Zanaafrica Programs Jan 2020 - Present
    Nairobi
ZanaAfrica Programs creates multi-layered systems of reproductive health and rights empowerment and education, combined with child protection, grounded in girls’ real life experiences, questions, concerns, hopes and aspirations. We have already positively impacted over 60,000 girls - and boys. Our curriculum with a five paired magazines is designed for measurable impact in gender norms and reproductive health knowledge, to be scaled by large NGOs and small CBOs alike who seek an easy-to-integrate, tested and proven solution into their adolescent programming. We are currently working with the Kenya Institution of Curriculum Development to scale across all public school from kindergarten to Class Eight. In 2019 we separated our Kenyan entity into a non-profit Company Limited by Guarantee and our social business to give both the best chance to scale. This enabled me to transition out of daily leadership of the non-profit programs and into board development and scaling strategy.Visit us at www.zanaafrica.org
  • Zanaafrica Foundation
    Founder
Zanaafrica Foundation Nov 2007 - Present
    Nairobi
As Founder of ZanaAfrica Foundation, I help to keep the ZanaAfrica family of organizations in sync to achieve our common vision: a world where girls in East Africa live healthy, safe, educated lives while defining their own purpose— a world in which Menstrual Health is recognized as a human right, and the onset of puberty as the most effective way to engage girls in a range of personal health decisions.
  • Ashoka
    Ashoka Fellow - East Africa
    Ashoka Dec 2014 - Present
As an Ashoka fellow, I participated in the 2018 Ashoka Globalizer, which helped our business to conceptualize the idea of a Fast Moving Educational Good. With this, we transform a Fast Moving Consumer Good into a product that answers questions about health and rights and directs consumers to local clinics through a partnership-based approach. We achieve this by partnering with best-in-class digital health resource partners (TICAH's Auntie Jane hotline, Ask Nivi, and Mum's Village) to help expand access to quality affordable menstrual products and reproductive health knowledge and access.
