Responsible for research administration and management of all research and sponsored program activity. Interface with senior executives of major corporations, senior administrators of funding agencies, and members of Congress to establish long-term relationships (obtained $6.5M in congressional funding). Develop policies and processes to protect the intellectual property developed at the University, and realize opportunities for technology transfer and commercialization. Responsible for design, development and construction of $14M+, 62,000 sq. ft. research building. Develop emphasis and courses in optical and wireless communications, and nanotechnology in the graduate program in the College of Engineering.

Managed R&D business unit in high-tech start-up company to develop and identify new technologies and intellectual property enabled Luxcore’s product solutions, including all-optical wavelength conversion subsystems, amplification schemes, dispersion management solutions, and advanced switching architectures. Helped to raise $22.5M in venture capital for company. Responsible for design, development and manufacturing of next-generation optical internetworking equipment and switching systems. Managed optical systems engineering, embedded software development, product realization process, R&D, and quality initiatives including ISO 9001 registration effort. Managed Phase I development effort for all-optical switching and transport system prototype; system demonstration conducted at 2001 OFC resulting in “Best of Systems” and “Best of Show” awards. Developed new product introduction plan and gate process for rapid prototype/product development.

Served as lead RF optimization engineer responsible for several engineering teams performing the optimization of CDMA wireless systems. Led cross-organizational development team responsible for fabrication, packaging, and qualifying the performance and reliability of linear optical fiber amplifiers and DWDM devices for broadband communication systems. Managed Destroyed Furnace QIT that optimized, developed and evaluated the performance of furnace designs for the optical fiber production facility (realized > $1M savings in 9 months). Developed and tested specialty fiber designs used in military applications such as fiber optic guided vehicles(FOG-V) ($2.9B DoD Non-Line of Sight FOG-V program), tactical nuclear radiation environments, tactical fiber optic cable assemblies (TFOCA) used in the Patriot Missile System during Operation Desert Storm ($70M US Army TFOCA program), etc. Conducted R&D on fiber measurements for specialty fibers including polarization maintaining fibers.
