Summary: Led a team of engineers to design, develop, and investigate novel deployable minimal-invasive catheter-based therapeutic ultrasound applicators for laparoscopic and endoluminal image-guided intervention to enhance penetration depth, gain, dose, and delivery of ultrasound hyperthermia and thermal ablation as potential to enhance the distribution of oncology drugs into deep-seated solid tumors. Responsible for the hardware and software design, technology development, prototyping, characterization, evaluation, and team management.Key successes: - Led the technical design, development, fabrication, and evaluation of the novel prototype deployable applicators for endoluminal delivery of ultrasound volumetric hyperthermia as an adjunct to chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy- Successfully designed, developed, fabricated, and characterized novel catheter-based applicators comprising of ultrasound phased array transducers and distensible balloons that can be deployed endoluminally and expanded close to the target to enhance therapeutic capabilities. - Investigated a clinical ultrasound hyperthermia system by performing acoustic and biothermal modeling for treatment of head & neck tumors- Investigated the delivery of volumetric hyperthermia using extracorporeal ultrasound random phased array transducer to enhance drug delivery- Experimental investigation of interstitial ultrasound applicators for thermal ablation of prostate cancer using dual-modality imaging and therapeutic ultrasound system - Investigated the delivery of hyperthermia with a commercial HIFU system (ExAblate, Insightec) under MR-guidance and real-time MR thermometry- Won Scholar-in-Training award (Society for Thermal Medicine)- Won 2nd-best Oral Talk award (American Association of Physicists in Medicine)- Selected for Best Oral Talk award (International Symposium of Therapeutic Ultrasound)

  • Imperial College London
    Phd Candidate
Imperial College London Jul 2015 - Aug 2019
    London, Gb
PhD Dissertation title "Ultrasound Image guidance and Therapy with random phased arrays"1) Research Focus: To design and investigate a therapeutic ultrasound system capable to deliver therapy and image guidance for treatment planning2) 3D ultrasound imaging: 3D imaging implemented both in simulations and experiments using synthetic aperture ultrasound imaging algorithms, which was the first ever successful demonstration of imaging with a therapeutic spherical random phased array.3) Computational Modeling: Performed theoretical analyses using acoustic models, implemented in Matlab and C++, to assess the feasibility of treatment approach in the presence of human ribs. The effects of human ribs on the treatment quality and focus deterioration was quantified and evaluated in different scenarios, and techniques for the corrections were suggested.4) Data Acquisition System: A data acquisition system was developed by integrating the therapeutic spherical random phased array transducer with a research ultrasound scanner (Verasonics Vantage system), through custom designed RF connectors. The Verasonics system was then programmed to acquire raw RF data for image reconstruction. 5) Dual Mode focused ultrasound system: Researched, designed, developed, and integrated a dual mode focused ultrasound system was developed comprising of an ultrasound random phased array transducer, RF generator, and pc-based imaging system. The system was capable of both image guidance and therapy with a single transducer and had the potential to overcome challenges associated with existing HFU system to target behind strong aberrating structures.6) Technical Communications: The PhD work contributed to two first author peer-reviewed publications, two conference proceedings and nine presentations in scientific conferences across UK, USA, Europe, China and Japan.
