Most patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) die from cardiovascular diseases. Vascular calcification is one of the risk factors that explains this increased mortality. Calcification of the medial layer is characterized by vascular stiffening due to the transdifferentiation of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMC) into an osteoblast-like phenotype and the precipitation of secondary CPP in the extracellular matrix surrounding the VSMC. However, until now not much is known about the role of endothelial cells in vascular calcification. In this study I aimed to elucidate the effect of endothelial cells on the calcification of VSMC, making use of an in vitro co-culture model.
