Working with clients to address product design issues of optical systems, medical devices and electronics for devices ranging from prototypes to field returns. Projects include:• Optical hazard assessments of laser-based and LED-based systems• Design of laser-based medical devices and consumer-grade optical systems• Optical ray trace analysis of devices under nominal and failure conditions• Hazard assessments of electronic systems intended for explosive environments

• Conducted rigorous, fact-based analyses to support projects ranging from small studies to large multi-institution collaborations in the areas of healthcare, technology, infrastructure resilience, cyber-deterrence, and military doctrine.• Synthesized the right information at the right level of detail from multi-disciplinary experiences, literature reviews, discussions with subject matter experts, and calculations to produce insightful, actionable, and audience-oriented results. • Built trust-based relationships and demonstrated flexibility in interactions through presenting results to APL leadership as well as military and civilian sponsors.

Research: Multiphoton microscopy for deep imaging in scattering biological tissue• Built and demonstrated a new laser microscope that allows high-resolution in vivo imaging deep within an intact mouse brain, enabling new opportunities for in vivo brain research (published in Nature Photonics, 400+ citations, doi:10.1038/nphoton.2012.336).• Acquired skills in laser microscopy, machine tooling, mouse surgery, and computer programming to design, build, and operate equipment needed for imaging experiments.• Published 10 peer-reviewed journal articles and presented at 7 leading optics conferences.
