Both the strategic and operational intent of an organisation must be properly served by Information Technology if it is to enable predictable service delivery. I achieve this by carefully considering the business strategy and aligning the supporting IT strategy with it, focusing particularly in areas where only Information Technology can make a difference.I am a firm believer in the Systems Thinking approach to service improvement and customer satisfaction.I understand that I can’t do everything, and seek to surround myself with people that have complementary skills.I direct teams of highly talented individuals, helping them to work together, inspired by a common goal and a passion to save patients’ lives.I have created a culture of service excellence within IT operations by assiduous attention to systems thinking, striving for the best process and best business fit; with staff and customers at the heart of improvement.I enjoy working hard; I can’t fix every issue but I listen and look for themes.I make time to think and plan, which needs to be done clearly and slowly.I am able to lead in a climate of uncertainty and ambiguities, shifting tactically as events unfold.I can analyse conflicting sources of information and come to a conclusion about the problem and the best of the solutions.Once decisions are made I am able to inspire teams of individuals to deliver the required outcomes.I have transformed the Blood Service's IT architecture from an inefficient and expensive distributed model to an efficient and cost effective centralised one.Objective analysis of the outcomes of my work was evidenced in a Gartner Peer Benchmarking study, commissioned in 2008. Gartner reported Blood Service in-scope IT costs were 34% below composite peer, while staffing levels were around half those of peer organisations. At the same time, overall service levels and customer satisfaction compared favourably to peers.
