With a goal to ‘reshape’ recognition in a way that reflected who we are as a bank, and empowered leaders and employees alike to practice recognition in a fit for purpose way, I pulled together a diverse team of people from across the bank, each with an interest, or existing role, in recognition, to co-create our future framework. Throughout a 12 month period we navigated complexities in an agile way, with a high level of stakeholder engagement, ultimately delivering a fit for purpose recognition approach including; • A strong brand which can be adopted or adapted to connect local recognition initiatives • A recognition framework that encompasses informal and formal recognition elements and career milestones, at a local and enterprise level – leveraging existing initiatives and in a cost neutral way • Strong connection with internal strategy and purpose • Supported by simple tools, resources, and targeted leader prompts • A new policy to set a minimum expectation for recognition. The approach kick starts the necessary behavioural change for a culture of appreciation and provides a firm foundation for future growth, integration and global alignment.

Leading change and cultural transformation with a focus on appreciation, this project has been a passion of mine for several years, before I had the opportunity to give it full focus in a dedicated role. Designing and implementing a global employee recognition framework across 17 countries and a workforce of 38,000 was incredibly fun, particularly the leadership (and employee) engagement required throughout. The embedment (ongoing) has been the most challenging but most rewarding piece, effecting real and sustainable change for the individual employee experience.
