Nairobi, Kenya

Responsible for East and southern Africa, with frequent travel to Somalia, southern Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Was the first journalist to report from the frontline in Eritrea during its war with Ethiopia in February 1998, and the only Arab/Western journalist to report from the island of Anjouan, the Comoros, when it declared secession in a military coup. Reported from Kinshasa, Zaire when it fell to the rebels in May 1997. Traveled with the SPLA in southern Sudan and reported on the civil war from both the South and East. Also covered the presidential elections in Kenya, Nigeria, and South Africa; peace talks for the Somali factions and the Sudan rebels; the Earth Summit in Johannesburg, South Africa 2000; famine in Ethiopia and southern Sudan. In March 2003, joined Al Arabiya TV on its launch, and was embedded with the 101st Marine division, 3rd Amphibious Assault Unit on its push to Baghdad.

As the Horn of Africa correspondent, reported from Eritrea, Djibouti and Ethiopia on the political and economic situations in each country.

Worked for various publications while on maternity leave.

Covered the Sri Lankan Civil War for the London based Independent newspaper, and later for the news agency IPS. Reported on three assassinations, including the one which killed President Ranasinghe Premadasa 1993, and traveled to Tamil held areas in the North and East. Also covered the Maldives Islands and reported from southern India.

Trained as a journalist while completing a Master Degree. Also worked for a syndicated news agency in London reporting on the first Gulf War.

Correspondent responsible for covering the first Palestinian Intifada in the West Bank and Gaza.

Worked on files of political prisoners and as a translator for Military Courts until the beginning of the Intifada, when recruited by AFP.
