My journey with Data Science started during the pandemic without me knowing it.To kill all the new free time that came from school going online, I asked to tag along with a family friend who volunteers as a hairdresser at an elderly home for women of determination. Coming across ‘aunties’ who were hard of hearing, I pulled out my phone, sure that there was an app that could translate sign language to speech or text, and vice versa, in real time. To my surprise, I couldn’t find any such, easily accessible AND free app in such a hurry. My next visit, I came more prepared with an ASL translation app (with limited functionality), using which my aunties managed to teach me simple Malaysian Sign Language convention (similar but not identical to ASL).It wasn’t until the research I did for my "Cambridge IPQ" study titled “To what extent does mobile app usage improve the quality of lives of elderly in Malaysia?”, in which I carried out an online questionnaire; that I connected this experience to an interest in Data Science. It was during this first exposure to collecting, cleaning, and analysing data using Excel’s Pivot Tables and Charts, that I realized how powerful a tool human-centered data is; and that’s exactly what would be required of a sign-language translation app. Since then, I’ve picked up proficiency in Python, R, Stata, SQL, Geographic Information System (GIS), Tableau, and many other skills to come.My ultimate goal being to utilize Data Science techniques towards mentioned sign language software, I value any skills and hands-on experience I can gain within or related to the Data Science field.
