October 1 & 2 2011, the VU University Amsterdam, the Technical University of Delft and the University of Groningen organized the first European iGEM Jamboree at the VU University Amsterdam. 50 European teams participated in this competition of which 18 teams were selected to go to the World Championships in Boston (MIT).

The International Genetically Engineered Machines (iGEM) competition is annually held at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the field of Synthetic Biology.
