About Dr Nafeez Ahmed Frsa Fsi
Award-winning systems theorist and change strategist for over 20 years. I’ve advised and supported many of the biggest organisations and networks in the world, including the United Nations Faith For Earth Initiative, the Organisation for Islamic Cooperation (the largest 56 member intergovernmental body after the UN), Aviva Investors, Ubisoft, the International Security Management Association, the Biodiversity Fund, the UK Ministry of Defence’s Defence Academy, the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, and the Global Citizens Assembly which represented the world population at the UN COP26 climate summit, among many others. I’m the author of the first peer-reviewed study developing a systems framework to understand climate, energy, food, economy, terrorism, and state militarisation as interconnected within the global system. Am also author of several major books and influential policy reports, most recently with the Club of Rome and RethinkX. I continue to integrate research across the natural and social sciences, developing transdisciplinary systems frameworks to help companies, nonprofits and citizens respond to humanity's biggest global challenges. I’ve used this systems framework to successfully predict some of the most consequential events in recent history, including warning of the 2008 banking collapse in the month before Nouriel Roubini. As a former Guardian and VICE investigative journalist, I communicate research to mass audiences through compelling multimedia journalism read and watched by millions, and am writer and co-producer of several feature documentaries and short films on systems approaches to global crisis and technology disruptions (including The Crisis of Civilization and Rethinking Humanity, check them out on YouTube).I build, advise and consult for organisations and networks on systems thinking in both the private and public sectors. I’ve won, led on, delivered and advised on major multi-million research, strategy and communications projects.

Executive Director
Director Of The Futures Lab
I am leading and developing the Unitas Futures Lab, a new systems transformation consultancy operating as the research and advisory arm of Unitas Communications Ltd. We deliver high-level advisory services to governments, intergovernmental institutions, companies and nonprofits based on a unique, proven peer-reviewed systems transformation framework that I have evolved over the last 20 years. The Unitas Futures Lab arms its clients with the lens and capabilities to recognise both the grave risks and tremendous opportunities of the most important transformations impacting the global economy and human civilisation.
Executive Director
The System Shift Lab is a systems change consultancy I founded, pioneering the concept of ‘public networked empathic intelligence’ to respond to what I call the current 'global phase-shift'. The prevailing system declines and collapses during this period of transformation involving the birth of a new system, and a new life-cycle for civilisation. The Lab's core mission is to lift our capacity to transform human systems as we shift from the last life-cycle of the current civilisation, into a new life-cycle.
Transformational Economics Commissioner
I am a Commissioner on the Transformational Economics Commission at the Club of Rome, where I've worked with a transdisciplinary team of economists, social scientists, earth scientists, data scientists, modellers and diplomats to develop the new 'Earth4All' framework for visionary new thinking in sustainability, economics, finance and prosperity. I am a contributor to the Club of Rome's 2022 landmark report, Earth for All: A Survival Guide for Humanity, playing a key role in particular in drafting the report's research on the clean energy transformation.
Special Investigations & Global Trends Reporter
I report and investigate on global system trends encompassing the intersections between societal challenges, technology disruptions and politics.
Director Of Global Research Communications
Working closely with James Arbib and Tony Seba at technology forecasting think-tank RethinkX, I headed-up research and communications on the intersecting societal, political, geopolitical, environmental and economic implications of fundamental technology disruptions which are transforming global civilisation from now, to 2030, and beyond. My role was to help RethinkX reach global audiences to maximise change impacts across civil society, media, business, finance and government policy. I led on creative direction for the development of new multimedia assets, along with business planning and strategy for my department. In particular, I was a contributing Lead Editor on RethinkX's report 'Rethinking Climate Change: How Humanity Can Choose to Reduce Emissions 90% by 2035 through the Disruption of Energy, Transportation, and Food with Existing Technologies'; and co-author of the RethinkX policy brief, Germany's Path to 'Freedom Energy' by 2030. I drove the PR and comms campaigns for both reports. I also wrote and co-produced the Rethinking Humanity short film, based on Arbib and Seba's book, Rethinking Humanity: Five Foundational Sector Disruptions, the Lifecycle of Civilizations, and the Coming Age of Freedom.
Systems Change Advisor
As Systems Change Advisor to the Global Assembly - which represented the world population at the United Nations COP26 climate summit - I provided governance and theoretical support on systems thinking and practice to the Assembly. I sat on the Global Assembly's Knowledge & Wisdom Committee, which provides governance oversight over the Assembly and played a key role in developing the learning materials on system transformation for Assembly members.

The report identified pathways to scaling behaviour change at personal, societal and institutional levels to accelerate system transformation.

This culminated in my scientific monograph, Failing States, Collapsing Systems: BioPhysical Triggers of Political Violence, published by the SpringerEnergyBriefs series of global science publisher Springer-Nature. My editor was Professor Charles Hall, who has pioneered the concept of Energy Return On Investment (EROI).
