I live in a small Latino town in Southern New Mexico that you’ve probably never heard of, especially since it only exists in the stories about me written by Charuko Nakamachi. Our little community is called Alviyána, and I’m the police department’s first detective.I have to admit that being detective is all a bit new and more than a little odd to me since our little village is trying to become a big city, and doesn’t really know what to do with itself. In Charuko’s first story in the series, Rosa y Espina / Rose and Thorn, our city council has attracted a couple of major companies to locate facilities here as an alternative to going off shore, and with these companies have come a strange mix of people who haven’t a clue about our Chicano, Hispano culture…well actually, I haven’t much of a clue about many of these newcomers. Things really became a problem when one of them, a preacher (with whom I’ve not had the best of relationships) was accused of brutally murdering his wife. He was even caught standing over her body with the knife in his hand. Honestly, I’d have loved to put him away, but I realized, against everyone’s advice, that even though all the evidence pointed to the preacher, he didn’t do it. I had to prove that he was innocent!Just to let you know, Charuko Nakamachi is Cheryl Mason-Middleton’s nom de plume, and her friends call her Charuko anyway. (Funny…, she doesn’t look Japanese.)
