He semi-retired and re-joined the engineering faculty at the University of South Florida, but remained available to serve as an expert in complex litigation cases as well as a technical consultant to Government, industry and other consulting firms.While with GHD, he worked with industry stakeholders and governmental officials on hundreds of contamination assessment and remediation projects, responsible waste and pollution management, and the application of best management practices and technologies. He is certified by the Supreme Court of Florida as a Circuit Mediator. He has also served as the ASTM Vice-Chair on Environmental Assessment, Risk Management and Corrective Action, and is the co-founder and served as the keynote speaker for the Florida Remediation Conference for over 22 years.

Nick Albergo maintains a small firm after a successful career as the founder and CEO of HSA Engineers & Scientists, a Florida-based engineering consulting firm that he successfully grew to more than 400 professionals spread throughout fifteen offices. The firm was sold to GHD in 2013. Nick has been working within the fields of environmental/geotechnical engineering, construction management and water resources for over 35 years including water use and disposal associated with agricultural, industrial, household, recreational and environmental activities. He has shaped the rules and regulations that are now in common use throughout the United States, as one of the primary authors of the ASTM E 1527, 1528 and E 1903 Standard Practice for Environmental Site Assessments. He also co-authored the statutes for the State of Florida’s Dry cleaning Solvent Clean-up Program, and assisted the State with the development of the regulations and the training of staff. Finally, he assisted the Governmental Accounting Standards Board in their development of Statement No. 49, Accounting and Financial Reporting for Pollution Remediation Obligations. Beyond his domestic efforts as a consultant to industry, and to further the profession, he has worked abroad as an advisor to other foreign Governments, private sector corporations and international lending institutions. Examples include working with the Panama Canal Authority, World Bank, the U.S. Export-Import Bank, and donor agencies including the U.S. Agency for International Development, the U.S. Trade & Development Agency, the European Union, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, and the United Nations Environment Programme. He has also served as a consultant and advisor to various foreign ministries on policy-making issues concerning environmental management and responsible industry practices.

He was the primary author of the ASTM Phase I & II Standards, and co-authored the statutes for Florida’s Drycleaning Cleanup Program and has worked abroad as an advisor to other foreign Governments, private sector corporations and international lending institutions.
