At the age of 15, I stumbled upon an international competition by Google aimed at teens called Google Code In.I joined FOSSASIA, an organization that works on open-source projects, and contributed to many of them. I also mentored new students on how to get started with open source.Some key highlights:- Selected as one of the 24 grand prize winners from 658 total participants, winning a trip to Googleplex HQ in California.- Led the development of a new website from scratch.- Contributed to open source projects like p5.js, TiddlyWiki, and sup.- Mentored and reviewed code for new students to help learn open source and make their first contributions.

I teamed up with Ryan Taylor, the founder of AllTeamz, a website for youth baseball coaching and recruitment. I met him on Reddit, where he liked my portfolio and my ideas for his site.We chatted over Skype and email to give the AllTeamz website a makeover. As a web developer for AllTeamz, I accomplished the following:– Collaborated with the founder of a popular website that provides coaching and recruitment of youth baseball, to work on a live product with many active users.– Gave the AllTeamz website a new look and feel with an improved UI design– Made it modern and responsive, so coaches and players could access it easily on mobile. – As it was a live product with an incremental roll out of the new design, resolved bugs to keep the site running smoothly and fast in production

At the age of 14 when I had been freelancing as a web developer for about 1.5 years, I came across a job post on one of my favorite technology blogs, MakeUseOf. I was doubtful, but my friend and future cofounder Aditya encouraged me to apply, saying I had nothing to lose.I’m glad I listened to him, because MakeUseOf loved my portfolio and hired me as their web developer.MakeUseOf was a fully remote company, with no calls or meetings. Their founder, Aibek Esengulov, was from Kyrgyzstan. I worked directly with the lead developer, James Bruce, from the UK. After school, I would log on to Gtalk (now Hangouts), and build MakeUseOf while chatting with James.Together, we redesigned and redeveloped a new theme for the entire MakeUseOf blog over a year.MakeUseOf was happy with the full redesign that was working flawlessly and supporting many different kinds of media-rich articles and pages. They concluded my contract after 1.5 years. This was the only “job” I’ve ever had — I only was self employed from that point, first individually and then leading my team.As a web developer for MakeUseOf, I achieved the following:– Landed a job at one of the most popular technology blogs, with millions of readers and subscribers, around the time when I had just entered high school.– Worked remotely with a diverse and talented team to deliver important results, while managing other freelancing projects and school work.– Ensured excellent styling and compatibility of various media elements, such as product images, image grids, youtube videos, quotes, etc, across years of blog posts.– Optimized the file size and load time of the blog using modern practices and techniques.– Created a mobile-friendly version of the blog using responsive design.– Fixed bugs and maintained the blog, ensuring smooth performance and user experience.
