Founder And OwnerToshiro Oct 1985 - Sep 1996Chicago, IllinoisNamed after the famous Japanese actor, Toshiro Mifune, the retail store Toshiro began as a cottage-industry import business with annual sales of $10,000. Naisbitt scoured the Japanese country side looking for "mingei" textiles (indigo dyed, Kasuri-woven, cotton, farm-wear) to market back in the states as fashion at outdoor street venues. One year later, she had opened a Japanese style boutique on Clark Street in Chicago. In just ten years, Naisbitt grew Toshiro into an nationally acclaimed three-story fashion and home accessories boutique with sales of $1.25 million. Toshiro earned the award, “Best Collision of Art and Business,” by Chicago’s New City Newspaper in 1995 by creating rotating art installation interiors that drew clients to the retail site in an age of growing catalog and online commerce. Toshiro was named one of two “Stores to Watch” worldwide by Spiegel’s professional trend-spotter in 1993. And the shop was recognized as “A favorite Chicago shopping destination” by Elle Magazine in 1989.
