Creative Arts for Developing Minds, a Connecticut based 501(c)(3) organization was created to provide children in foster care and adoptive children with opportunities for creative expression, to increase their self-esteem and to develop a sense of community. Children in foster care between the ages of 2 and 12 are engaged in combined music, art and movement activities as a way to help them reverse the effects of the trauma associated with the removal from their family of origin. These children, through no fault of their own, face challenges that need special attention but are often overlooked because there is a lack of understanding and knowledge of these issues. Written and published by Nan in 2014, Rocky Shores is the story of a young veteran of the foster care system named Charles Farmer. This fictional work follows Charles as he tries to integrate into his latest placement and a new school environment. Through his struggles and feelings, the reader experiences what it is like to be a foster child. Providing the opportunity for a child in foster care to just be a kid is my goal in directing Creative Arts for Developing Minds. To just play, with no concern about right and wrong, who to please or what the expectations are, is the atmosphere that is prevalent during the sessions run.
