I was fortunate to have been raised by an engineer father (and Marine) who taught me how to use tools competently. This prepared me to be hired as the first female bike mechanic at Cycles by George in Cranston, NJ when I was around 14 years old. It was remarkable to work through the 10-speed bike craze of 1971-75 when I might sell a new bike every hour. It was a wonderful opportunity to learn how things work and can be repaired. On weekends, I would transition from mechanic to saleswoman. The store would be packed, and my job was to listen carefully to people's needs, explain the 10-speed options that might work for them at various price points, and then close the deal within an hour. In 1972, the owner paid for me to attend Schwinn school in Chicago. When I left NJ to attend college at Clark University in Worcester, MA, I worked at O'Neill's bicycle shop and offered a class on changing your own tire to women members of the NOW branch on my college campus.
