I help people better understand grief and loss by facilitating community talks, grief retreats, and corporate/professional seminars. I specialize in connecting on a personal level with audiences and gently leading people through difficult topics with inspiring storytelling, relevant research, and practical guidance. For over 20 years I have been writing, teaching, speaking, and conducting research on grief and loss. I am the author of Closure: The Rush to End Grief and What It Costs Us, and professor of sociology at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, where I teach classes on grief, death, emotions, violence, and justice. I am also the author of Framing the Victim: Domestic Violence, Media and Social Problems. I engage with a national and international audience through my popular TEDx talk (Beyond Closure) and interviews such as those with The Boston Globe, The Guardian, The L.A. Times, Huffington Post Live, U.S. News & World Report, CBS News, Real Simple, and Prevention.
