Nimkee Nupigawagan Healing Center

• The focus of this practicum was on the cultural aspects of the program in place at Nimkee. The research project “Honouring our strength” was at the center of this practicum, as this research was unfolding during this time and looked beyond the question surrounding cultural healing being effective, and onto why it is so effective. Other area covered during this practicum involved policy review, the importance of words selected when writing policy and the power these words hold. First Nation traditions, ceremonies, vulnerabilities of First Nations communities and connection to history were reviewed in depth as they pertain to program design. • One on one counseling sessions with clients ages 12-17 yrs. were also apart of the training hours. Counseling sessions as well as the overall program design of the agency was built on Choice and Solution based theories, as these theories have been proven to blend well with the holistic approach utilized by the center.• Emphasis at Nimkee revolved around the youth’s experiences.
