The Global Environment Facility Small Grants Programme (GEF SGP) is implemented by UNDP. It empowers local communities by disbursing grants to non-governmental and community-based organizations for initiatives that result in global environmental benefits while enhancing local well-being and livelihoods. GEF focal areas are biodiversity conservation, climate change mitigation, sustainable land management, protecting international waters and phasing out of persistent organic pollutants (POPs.)Key responsibilities include:- ● Management of Country Programme Team.➢ Regular engagement with UNDP Country Office, National Steering Committee and Government of Kenya.➢ Conduct National Steering Committee meetings. ● Programme Development and Management.➢ Development of strategic SGP country documents.➢ Preparation and implementation of annual programme and financial targets.➢ Application of M&E approach in design, implementation and completion of project activities.➢ Organize workshops and exchange visits for grantees and stakeholders in select landscapes➢ Develop accurate and updated SGP database. ● Resource Mobilization.➢ Develop concept papers for resource mobilization.★ Secured USD 4 Million of GEF funds for GEF phase V and USD 3.5 Million for phase VI. ● Knowledge Management and Communications.➢ Prepare and disseminate knowledge and communications products.

Key roles & responsibilities: ● Programme Development and Management.➢ Exercise quality control over the development of a portfolio of project ideas, concepts and closely monitor the programme’s progress and results.➢ Work closely and support the National Steering Committee (SGP Board) and its deliberations especially during project proposal selection, approval and also in providing strategic guidance for the Programme.➢ Manage the annual SGP allocations (administrative and grants), maintain the financial integrity of the Programme and ensure most effective use of SGP resources.➢ Prepare regular narrative and financial reports on programme implementation status and keep the global SGP database updated.➢ Conduct periodic programme monitoring field visits and provide technical, operational support and guidance to SGP grantees as required.

COMPACT (Community Management of Protected Areas Conservation) is an initiative of the GEF SGP designed to demonstrate that community-level initiatives can significantly enhance the effectiveness of biodiversity conservation in globally significant protected areas. Key achievements & milestones. ● Developed a Site Strategy for Mt. Kenya World Heritage Site after commissioning a site-wide baseline assessment and multiple consultations with key stakeholders. ● Organized the launch of the GEF Small Grants Programme (SGP) COMPACT Initiative in Kenya. ● Enhanced visibility of COMPACT through organized visits to project sites, production of project brochures and documentaries, presentations at conferences, newspaper and magazine articles. ● Initiated 25 community-based projects by working with CBOs and NGOs to improve their proposals according to GEF Small Grants Programme (SGP) guidelines and NSC recommendations. ● Conducted continuous monitoring of projects through field appraisals, project site visits, review of financial and progress reports, review of Baseline Assessment and EIA reports and attending PIC meetings. ● Regularly organized and hosted Local Consultative Body (LCB) meetings. Prepared the minutes, meeting agenda and provided LCB members with relevant information on COMPACT’s activities. ● Promoted collaborative partnerships between the Protected Area government staff (Kenya Wildlife Service and the Kenya Forest Service) and local communities around Mt. Kenya National Reserve.

The Green Belt Movement is a local, national NGO that promotes tree-planting as a strategy to mitigate environmental degradation, avert natural resource conflicts, build self-esteem among rural women, influence national policy and create awareness on the holistic value of a well-conserved environment.Key achievements & milestones. ● Organized training workshops on the GBM tree-planting methodology for participants from various African countries. Tasks included: ➢ Developing a tree-planting curriculum with representatives of the women groups for the workshops. ➢ Training women group leaders to effectively share information and their experiences with workshop participants. ➢ Supervising the logistics for successful workshops. ● Assisted in developing a tourism package for the Green Safari Programme, which promoted the combination of a one-week rural homestay with GBM members and a one-week conventional safari. ● Coordinated the logistics of the International Euro-African Green Parties Conference held December 3rd - 5th, 1998 where 200 participants from Africa, Europe and the Americas attended the conference.
