About Nancy Compton

I am a licensed clinical psychologist with over 25 years’ experience as a professor both at the University of California, San Francisco, and Berkeley. My private practice focuses on working with women, singles and partners contemplating and transitioning to parenthood, life/work balance, adoption and issues related to attachment, parenting, and navigating changes in relationships and careers. An area of expertise is in working with women and children to help them recover from trauma. For over 20 years I worked as the Senior Psychologist and later the Director of Training at the UCSF Child Trauma Research Program. Clientele have included pregnant women, young children and their caregivers, and adoptive families. Currently, I provide consultation to clinicians on evidence-based practices to help children and adults who have experienced trauma. A book that I coauthored, published by Zero to Three entitled, "Losing a Parent to Death in the Early Years: Guidelines to the Treatment of Traumatic Bereavement in Infancy and Early Childhood has been translated into several languages."As the Research Director for the Whole Child Initiative, a project founded by Drs. Jane Goodall and Marion Wright Edelman, I worked to identify, support, and uplift small grassroots programs in remote areas of the world helping women and children thrive despite great adversity. Following the publication of a book I coauthored on teen pregnancy, I was a founding member of a nationally recognized and awarded center in Massachusetts for primarily Puerto Rican pregnant and parenting teens to come with their children to gain support and an education. For several years I worked with a Harvard researcher in evaluating a perinatal services network for previously homeless pregnant women in Oakland, CA. This work served as the basis for my book published by Garland entitled, "Resilience in African American Children who have Experienced Homelessness."Following years of providing treatment to survivors of violence, I was recognized by the California Legislature Assembly for “Dedication to ending family violence by helping to heal the hearts, minds and souls of victims of family violence.” Additionally, I was the recipient to the “Courage Award” from the Family Violence Law Center. I have received specialized training in somatic work, Jungian dreamwork, and art therapy as well as more traditional modalities including TFCBT, CBT, CPP, and motivational interviewing. My approach is mindfulness and strengths based, relational, feminist, psychodynamic, holistic, and culturally informed.
