Director Of Communications
I served as the spokesperson and chief communications strategist for two elected San Francisco Sheriffs: the City's first female sheriff, Vicki Hennessy, from 2017 through 2019; and the City's first Asian American Sheriff, Paul Miyamoto, from 2020 through the end of 2021. I served on both the Sheriff's executive command staff and management team, collaborating with my colleagues and drafting media statements, press releases, newsletters, talking points and speeches. After joining the Sheriff's Office, I secured funding and selected a developer for a new San Francisco Sheriff's Office website. This process took about 18 months (warp speed by bureaucratic standards). Ten months later, we launched a new user-friendly, accessible website (sfsheriff.com). Soon after, the pandemic hit. Fortunately, we had a functional website to communicate important public updates. I remain grateful to former Sheriff Vicki Hennessy who appointed me to this position in 2017 and to Sheriff Paul Miyamoto who retained me when he assumed office in January 2020 following Sheriff Hennessy's decision to retire and Sheriff Miyamoto's subsequent election. I had so much fun learning about both individuals who were the first Sheriffs in San Francisco history to rise through the ranks and win election.I also thank my Sheriff's Office colleagues who answered my zillions of questions and showed me infinite patience and generosity. They are some of the nicest, hardest-working people I've ever known and for whom I hold the greatest respect. While working for the Sheriff in Room 456 at City Hall, I learned that my late great uncle, Peter Curtis, served as Sheriff from 1904-1906, stepping down right before the Great Earthquake! Peter Curtis' portrait hung in the hallway outside my office with the other Sheriffs in San Francisco history, bringing my family ancestry full circle.

One of the hardest things to do is write about yourself. Yet the very nature of creating college application essays and professional resumes demands that you do. I’m Nancy Hayden Crowley, an award-winning writer with more than 35 years experience helping individuals, businesses and nonprofit organizations find the right words to keep audiences engaged with a client’s key messages. I begin by asking a lot of questions, which helps trigger new information and different ways of looking at your skills that you may not have considered before. I follow a process for either area of concentration: College Application Essays and Resumes. There are lots of folks online who offer similar services...except they’re not the same. I consult primarily in the San Francisco Bay Area and prefer to meet with clients in person. I am committed to your success and in my experience, meeting and working with clients face to face on their personal essays and resumes yields superior results. It also creates an extra level of accountability, which most people need to get things done. I accept only a limited number of clients, focusing on quality, not quantity. If you find that you’re spinning your wheels, staring at walls and don’t know where to begin, please message me on LinkedIn. Let’s move forward, save you time and help get the results you deserve -- whether it’s acceptance to the college of your dreams or a new, rewarding career.

I develop and distill messages in a variety of platforms, including E-mails, newsletters and press releases. I also provide media relations and media placement services. My husband, FX, and I started the FX Crowley Company in 2013. FX’s 35-year career in organized labor and role as a community leader serving on three different San Francisco Commissions provides the context for the consulting services we offer.Check out the FX Crowley Company website at www.fxcrowley.com to see our work.
Marketing Communications Consultant
I wrote marketing materials and provided communications support for individuals, businesses and non-profit organizations. I also ran my husband's campaign (FX Crowley) for San Francisco Supervisor District 7 from January through December 2012. This included: Creating master database of donors (we had more than 700); Processing all campaign contributions, compiling and filing data for SF Ethics Commission to secure public finance matching funds to campaign contributions;Writing and sending donor thank you letters; Drafting candidate statement for ballot; Writing all website copy;Interviewing candidate and providing responses to more than 35 questionnaires;Conceiving, writing and overseeing production of all campaign collateral; Writing and coordinating email marketing campaign to supporters. In a field of nine candidates, FX came in second by a mere 132 votes out of more than 35,000 cast. Disappointing yes, but the experience was life-changing for the better. We control our destiny and are doing work we love and care about.
Development Director
I joined the St. Stephen School and Parish as the development director in 2007 to raise money for the new Parish Center's capital campaign. With no previous experience in development, I learned quickly how to cultivate donors and manage those relationships. Here's what else I did:Researched foundations and identified connections with the school and parish.Contacted foundations, arranged meetings with decision-makers and wrote grants generating more than $500,000 in private, capital campaign contributions. Created and executed special events honoring donors and community leaders. Researched donor recognition wall concepts; recommended design and oversaw installation. Conceived, wrote, designed and published bi-annual alumni newsletter.
Freelance Writer, Editor & Researcher; Extreme Volunteer
In 1994, I gave birth to my first child, embracing his upbringing and the multitude of opportunities and activities that come with parenting. I redoubled my efforts with the birth of my daughter in 1998. I shared my professional experience and skills with the parent organizations at my children's schools, serving a term as St. Stephen Women's Guild president and five years on the Ignatian Guild Board of Directors (St. Ignatius College Prep). I volunteered and chaired multiple fundraisers and special events including four St. Stephen Fashion Shows, two St. Stephen auctions and the SI International Food Fair. Throughout this period, I consulted to various colleagues, friends and children, offering them career advice and helping them with their writing, including personal essays and resume building.
Principal
I worked collaboratively with late colleague and dear friend Patsy Barich who I met on my first job at Lowry & Partners in 1982. We managed the California Association of Nurserymen account as well as other opportunities such as the Rib Cook Off for John Ascuaga's Nugget in Reno. I got married in April of 1991 and planned to grow a family. I dedicated myself to my business until my first child was born in June of 1994.
Vice President
I rejoined Gelman & Gray Communications to work on the California Association of Nurserymen account. I managed this for G&G, and then took the business with me when I hung out my own shingle in January 1991.
Vice President
I worked for Janis MacKenzie who is one of the hardest working, disciplined and creative PR practitioners I know. She's still in business almost 30 years later, attracting high-profile corporate accounts and providing pro bono services to her pet causes like the SPCA. Janis hired the best people. I soaked up their collective wisdom and experience, learned on the job and grew my PR skills. I helped Janis on several professional service accounts (i.e. management consultants) which was a long way from my McDonald's restaurant experience. I loved Janis, but I didn't love professional services and yearned to return to retail public relations. I had an opportunity to take a few months off and return to my previous employer, Gelman & Gray, to work on the California Association of Nurserymen business. And so I did.
Vice President
This is where I started my career. I graduated from UC Berkeley and got a job as a secretary at Lowry & Partners, a public relations firm in San Francisco with five managing partners including the legendary Bob Lowry. After a few months, Lowry promoted me to Junior Account Executive on the agency's marquee account, Bay Area McDonald's restaurants, where I booked Ronald McDonald's personal appearances and wrote press releases. Within a year, the agency's supervising partner on McDonald's left to start to start her own firm and asked me to join her. I declined. As the only person on the Lowry staff with institutional knowledge of the McDonald's account, I had the opportunity of a lifetime to save the business for Lowry. And I did. For the next five years, I worked my tail off, made mistakes, honed my PR and writing skills and built relationships, which have served me throughout my career. After six years, I yearned for new experiences and professional growth so I left Lowry (which had morphed into Gelman & Gray Communications through a series of acquisitions). I rejoined Gelman & Gray about two years later to manage the California Association of Nurserymen account. Looking back, I am deeply grateful to Bob Lowry and the other partners for believing in and supporting me through this early and amazing career opportunity.
