Through active listening, I encourage students to explore and express their ideas and achieve their best potential. As grant writer and editor, the focus is on creating a written product but the skills of listening and responding are part of the process. It is necessary to develop relationships with program staff members, to ask questions and listen to the stories that will help create a compelling narrative. In a similar way, in working with writers to clarify the meaning of a passage, it is necessary to ask the right questions and through that process to understand and then convey the meaning clearly and compellingly.

As coordinator of a training program for international medical students pursuing rotations in various medical specialties in the U. S, I worked with more than 100 medical students from many parts of the world, whose goal was to attain residency in an American medical institution. I verified their credentials and placed them in rotations in the network of doctors developed through my outreach. Through the process, I developed strong and positive relationships with the students, providing a point of stability and encouragement for them in a difficult endeavor. I learned about life in countries such asTurkey, China, Brazil, Malaysia, Jordan and others, and about the grassroots communication that allows these students to be global citizens. It was truly satisfying when a number of the students attained residencies and research opportunities that would be life changing experiences for them.
