DEEP EXPERIENCE AND EXPERTISE IN NEGOTIATING LEASESI have extensive experience in drafting and negotiating shopping center, commercial and retail leases and ancillary documents in every major US market and Canada. More recently, my representation has focused on the tenant side. Clients particularly value how much I care about their projects and the passion I bring to my work. My experience on both the landlord and tenant side of lease negotiations enables me to understand the issues of both sides. I am well known in the shopping center industry and I have developed good working relationships with national and regional landlords. Both my background and my experience enable me to propose commercially reasonable compromises for efficient and effective results for my clients. UNDERSTANDING LANDLORD REQUIREMENTS AND ISSUES With over a decade of in-house counsel experience with two national REITs, I was responsible all aspects of our national shopping center portfolio, from handling leasing and operational issues through dealing with tenant bankruptcy. This left me with thorough understanding of the needs and requirements of shopping center and commercial landlords. SECURING THE OPTIMAL LEASE TERMSBeing in the shopping center industry for over 30 years, I can truly say “I have seen it all” when it comes to retail leases. Relationships are key to a successful negotiation, as we regularly meet the same parties in different lease transactions. My primary goal when representing tenants is to help them secure a lease at the best possible terms, while maintaining an excellent and productive relationship with the landlord that will span the term of the lease. This working relationship between the parties is valuable in all aspects in the “life” of a lease from initial construction and build-out, to operational issues and finally, to any issues that may arise at expiration of the term.
