I interview growers about their enterprises, take photos and write cover articles about them for California Fresh Fruit, Pacific Nut Producer, Vegetables West, American Vineyard and California Dairy magazines. I also report on grower workshops sponsored by County Extension agents. So far I have published 21 articles, concurrently with earning my Ph.D. in agricultural entomology. The farmers I interviewed include growers of citrus, pomegranate, U-pick tree fruit, avocados, wine grapes, pistachios, macadamia nuts, salad greens and dairy cows. The seminar topics include laurel wilt in avocado, fumigation and alternatives in strawberries, huanglongbing disease in citrus, salinity management, and farm labor.

I taught A.P. Environmental Science for 5 years and one year of Health/P.E., but mainly I have taught freshman biology every year. I changed the biology course from being content-based to more inquiry-based and have added units on ecology, evolution and genetics which were not part of the course when I started there. I emphasize how to design and do experiments, including in the school garden, started by my science teacher colleagues and myself. Besides the student-designed experiments, I make the class interactive with PowerPoints, pair share, questions, drawing, video clips, hands-on simulations, constructing models, Biology songs, etc. With the help and prodding of the school librarian, Nora Murphy, I instituted a monthly argumentative essay assignment in which the students have to write an argument on a particular topic, and cite their sources. In this and other ways, I strive to empower the students to create and make things happen, and not just react to what is happening. The students at FSHA are wonderful: polite and eager to learn. The Dominican sisters create a culture of mutual respect and help everyone develop their interests and abilities, which makes for a happy place to work and learn.Because life is short and I want to return to a more agriculture-related field, I am starting a Ph.D. program in Entomology at U.C. Riverside in the fall of 2014. My dissertation will likely focus on moth pheromones, which can be used to control moth pests of agricultural crops.

Preceded by 3 months of language learning in Davao, I assisted Developers Foundation, a local Filipino NGO, in helping small farmers grow rice more profitably and sustainably and to supplement with other crops such as fish, pigs, ducks and vegetables. We also encouraged the farmers to not burn the rice straw and to grow azolla in with the rice to maintain soil fertility. I also showed them how to use a control group when testing something new, and to use 1 square meter test plots to measure the effects of new variables, instead of the mass of the entire crop.
