  I began my career in education teaching on level high school English. This meant, of course, teaching the skills necessary to pass the state mandated TAKS test at the time. I saw this as an opportunity to teach no "to the test" but to make sure that my teaching included tested materials in context of interesting topics and literature. I studied the end of course manual of skills and incorporated as many skills as appropriate into each lesson. I saw this as an opportunity to teach no "to the test" but to make sure that my teaching included tested materials in context of interesting topics and literature. I studied the end of course manual of skills and incorporated as many skills as appropriate into each lesson. Eventually I moved into teaching advanced academics courses - AP Literature and AP Language. Ultimately I was trained and began teaching the International Baccalaureate curriculum for Literature. After teaching English for ten years I accepted the challenge to teach Theory of Knowledge, the core of the International Baccalaureate curriculum. TOK relates to the areas of knowledge ie. Math, Science, Literature, History etc. but also includes Ways of Knowing ie. perception, faith, memory, imagination..This curriculum opened my eyes to possibilities I never before imagined. This IS what education is about. TOK allows us to explore not just what we know, but how we know. Ultimately, TOK allows us to think critically and analyze what we know and believe to be truth. I am now the International Baccalaureate Diploma Coordinator for my high school, L.D. Bell High School. We have a phenomenal program in our high school and are very proud of our International Standards. Show less
